![]() Recently too, the Authority published a list of tariffs stipulating prices to be charged for the hire of umbrellas and deckchairs and the Authority said that enforcement will take place throughout the remaining part of the summer season. The Authority said that enforcement had long been taking place and in fact operators have already been fined €12,000 in penalties for breaching their contracts. ![]() This orderly situation was restored as personnel from the Authority were physically present to ensure that operators respected the regulations and stuck to their contract which also stipulates that umbrellas and deckchairs may only be opened when they are hired out, and not before. In fact it was highly evident the bay was mostly clear and could be enjoyed in all its natural beauty. this morning when pictures sent to from Comino showed that contrary to normal custom, the operators were not cluttering up all the space. ![]() The result of this action was evident at about 8.00 a.m. The chaos in this Comino bay prior to the Santa Marija feast caused public anger and an outcry as deckchairs were strewn on the wharf, on the small sandy strip and even on parts of the hinterland and the outcry caused the Authority to take immediate action. There were only a few score umbrellas and deckchairs today with the Authority pointing out that although in past summers there were often up to 1,500 sunbeds today’s operators are under contract there are to be no more than 230 deckchairs and these have to be hired out at a fixed price. The Blue Lagoon in Comino was restored to the public today as the Tourism Authority followed up its warning of effective enforcement on umbrella and deckchair operators calling on them not to occupy the whole bay.
